The previous sections treated the guest–VMM relationship as the principal isolation boundary in a virtualization system. In practice, traditional VMMs contain several boundaries: between guest and VMM, between guest and another guest, between user-space helper and kernel-space core (in hosted VMMs), and between driver domains and the rest of the system (in disaggregated VMMs). Every cross-boundary interaction needs a mechanism to carry it.
This section is about those mechanisms. It is the first section in the survey that is mostly not about traditional virtualization specifically — the techniques here generalize to any system whose architecture introduces internal boundaries. The reason it appears in a virtualization survey is that the cost of cross-domain communication, more than any other single factor, determines whether a disaggregated architecture can compete on performance with a monolithic alternative.
What a Cross-Domain Mechanism Must Provide
Any mechanism for moving information across an isolation boundary must answer four questions. Different mechanisms answer them differently, and the answers determine the mechanism’s cost profile.
- Control transfer. How does execution move from the sender’s context to the receiver’s? Synchronously (sender blocks waiting for a reply), asynchronously (sender continues), or not at all (receiver polls)?
- Data transfer. How do bytes move? Copy, mapping, or shared memory? Who owns the buffer, and how is its lifetime managed across the boundary?
- Notification. How does the receiver learn that there is work? Interrupt, doorbell, polling?
- Authorization. How does the receiver know the sender is permitted to make this request? Implicit (the boundary itself enforces it), explicit (capabilities, tokens), or by trust in the sender’s identity?
The four are largely orthogonal: a mechanism can use synchronous control with shared-memory data, asynchronous control with copy, polling with mapping. The well-known mechanisms below are particular combinations of answers.
Synchronous Boundary Crossings
The simplest mechanism is a synchronous call across the boundary: the sender pauses, the receiver runs, the sender resumes when the receiver returns. This is the model of a system call (user-to-kernel), a hypercall (guest-to-VMM), or an IPC call in a microkernel (process-to-process).
Hypercalls
A hypercall (introduced in §04) is a guest-initiated synchronous call into the VMM, modeled on a system call but crossing the guest–VMM boundary instead of the user–kernel one. The guest places arguments in registers (or in a shared-memory area), executes a designated instruction (VMCALL on Intel, VMMCALL on AMD), and the hardware vectors directly to the VMM. The VMM dispatches based on a hypercall number, executes the requested operation, places results in registers, and returns.

Hypercalls have a clean cost model — one VM-exit, one VMM dispatch, one VM-entry — and a clean semantic model: the guest knows exactly what it asked for and the VMM knows exactly what to do. Their use is universal in paravirtualized systems and remains common even in hardware-assisted ones for control-plane operations (memory-balloon adjustments, time queries, scheduler hints).
The cost is non-trivial. A round-trip is hundreds to low thousands of cycles, dominated by the VM-exit/entry cost rather than by the work itself. For high-rate operations (every page-table update, every packet send), batching is essential — the alternative collapses performance to the rate at which the boundary can be crossed.
Microkernel IPC
In microkernel-style systems (L4, seL4, Singularity), all cross-component interaction goes through a synchronous IPC primitive. The same mechanism that user processes use to talk to the file system is used by drivers to talk to the scheduler, by the network stack to talk to the NIC driver, and by every guest VM to talk to its hosting domain.
The microkernel IPC literature is, in effect, a thirty-year study of how to make a synchronous boundary crossing fast. The L4 family famously brought IPC cost down by an order of magnitude relative to first-generation microkernels by combining several techniques: register-only argument passing for short messages, direct context switch (no scheduler intervention), no kernel-side buffering, and aggressive use of architectural features (segment registers, fast system-call instructions).
The lessons that carry into virtualization are:
- The fixed per-call cost matters more than the per-byte cost. Optimizations focus on reducing what happens around the actual data movement.
- Direct context switch beats scheduler involvement. When the receiver is known and runnable, switching to it directly is much faster than enqueueing a message and letting the scheduler pick.
- Capabilities should be transferred, not consulted. Authorization checks on every call become the bottleneck; passing the capability in the message and trusting its prior validation is faster.
When synchronous fits
Synchronous mechanisms suit operations where the sender genuinely needs the result before it can continue, and where the per-call cost is amortized over enough work to be acceptable. They are a poor fit for high-rate streaming workloads where the sender could profitably continue without waiting.
Asynchronous and Shared-Memory Mechanisms
When per-call cost cannot be reduced enough, the alternative is to amortize the cost across many operations. This is the move from synchronous calls to shared-memory rings: one boundary crossing carries many operations rather than one.
Shared-Memory Rings
A shared-memory ring is a region of memory mapped into both sender and receiver, structured as a producer/consumer queue. The sender writes entries into the ring; the receiver reads them; a notification mechanism tells the receiver when there is new work (and, optionally, the sender when there is space).

Rings appear in many places under different names: virtio’s virtqueue, Xen’s I/O ring, AF_XDP rx/tx queues, NVMe submission/completion queues, kernel io_uring. The structure is the same; the differences are in record format, in how producer/consumer indices are synchronized, and in how notification is configured.
The efficiency wins are uniform:
- Per-operation cost approaches zero. The cost of crossing the boundary is paid once for many operations, not once per operation.
- The sender and receiver can run concurrently. While the receiver is processing entry N, the sender can be writing entry N+1.
- Notification can be suppressed. When the queue is non-empty and the receiver is actively polling, the sender need not notify; when the queue has space and the sender is actively producing, the receiver need not signal back-pressure.
The cost is complexity. A ring is a concurrent data structure; correctness requires careful index management, memory ordering, and protection against malicious or buggy participants on the other side of the boundary. (A ring shared with an untrusted guest must validate every descriptor; a ring shared with trusted code can skip validation.) The ring itself is part of the trust contract.
Notification Mechanisms
Even with a ring, some boundary crossing is required to tell the receiver work has arrived. Several mechanisms carry the notification:
- Doorbell write. The sender writes a designated memory-mapped register; the write traps (causing a VM-exit, or a fault that the kernel routes). This is the simplest mechanism and the highest per-notification cost.
eventfd-style signal. The sender writes a kernel descriptor; the kernel wakes a thread blocked on it. Used heavily in KVM (ioeventfd) to avoid bouncing through the user-space VMM.- Polling. The receiver does not wait for a notification at all; it reads the ring head index periodically. Notification cost goes to zero; CPU cost goes up. Standard for the highest-rate workloads.
- Hardware-assisted notification. Posted interrupts (introduced in §06) deliver notifications across the guest–VMM boundary with no software path. SR-IOV’s MSI-X delivery is the analogous mechanism for guest–device.
The pattern across the list is the same one that governs VM-exits in §04: each generation of optimization is about removing the boundary crossing rather than making it cheaper. Polling, posted interrupts, and ioeventfd all share the property that the boundary, in steady state, does not need to be crossed at all.
Memory Sharing and Grant Tables
Rings are themselves a special case of a more general mechanism: shared memory across a boundary. A producer-consumer ring is the most common pattern, but boundary-crossing data flows can also use bulk shared regions, scatter-gather buffer pools, and fine-grained grants of individual pages.
The shared-mapping model
In the simplest case, sender and receiver agree on a region of memory and both map it into their address spaces. The mapping itself, once established, is free; data movement is a memory write on one side and a read on the other. This is how virtio buffers and Xen I/O rings work.
The boundary’s enforcement role becomes subtle: it does not police every access (that would defeat the purpose of sharing) but it bounds what can be shared and withdraws the sharing when the relationship ends. The boundary is enforced at setup and teardown, not at every access.
Xen-style grant tables
Xen’s grant tables generalize the shared-mapping model. A guest can grant a specific page, or a range of pages, to a specific other domain, with specific access rights (read-only, read-write, copy-only). The grant is published to the hypervisor, the recipient retrieves it, and the hypervisor enforces the access restrictions.

Grant tables provide several useful properties beyond raw shared memory: revocation (the granter can withdraw the grant), fine-grained authorization (each grant names a specific other domain), and delegation control (the grant can disallow re-granting). These properties are essential when the parties on the two sides do not fully trust each other — exactly the setting of a disaggregated VMM where driver domains and guest domains share buffers but do not trust each other’s correctness.
Capability-based variants
Microkernel and language-based systems generalize grants further into capabilities: unforgeable references that name both an object and the operations permitted on it. A capability passed across a boundary conveys both the data location and the authorization to access it. The mechanism subsumes grant tables and extends naturally to non-memory resources (a capability can name a port, a thread, a hardware register).
This is the model RedLeaf uses for cross-domain communication, and the model Singularity used for inter-process channels. It is also the model that maps most naturally onto Rust’s ownership system: a capability can be a typed reference, and its forge-resistance can be statically guaranteed by the type system rather than enforced at runtime by a hypervisor.
Cost Anatomy
Across all the mechanisms above, the cost of a cross-domain interaction breaks down into a small number of components:

The dominant components are usually the boundary crossing and the context switch — they happen once per interaction regardless of how much data moves. The history of cross-domain communication in virtualization is largely the history of batching (paying the boundary crossing once for many operations) and eliminating (polling, posted interrupts, ioeventfd — paying it not at all).
Implications for Disaggregated and Language-Isolated VMMs
The trade-off that defines a disaggregated VMM was raised in §03: the smaller TCB of the privileged kernel core comes at the cost of turning every internal component interaction into a cross-domain interaction. Whether this trade-off is favourable depends entirely on the cost of the cross-domain mechanism, anatomized above.
A disaggregated VMM whose components communicate via slow synchronous IPC pays a substantial performance cost for its isolation. Xen’s history is in part the story of mitigating this cost: shared rings instead of per-operation IPC, grant tables instead of copies, eventually vhost-style direct data paths between driver domains and the kernel.
A language-isolated system has a different cost profile. The boundary crossing is no longer a hardware privilege transition; it is a function call, plus whatever runtime checks the language’s safety model requires. If the type system can statically prove that a buffer transferred across a boundary belongs to the recipient, no runtime check is needed at all — the mechanism collapses to a pointer transfer, which costs essentially nothing.
This is the potential performance argument for language-isolated VMMs: that the natural language of cross-domain communication (a typed reference, an ownership transfer, a channel-typed message) maps onto the most efficient hardware mechanism (a direct call with no boundary crossing) without losing the isolation guarantee. Whether the argument holds under realistic workloads depends on what the type system can actually prove about the realistic communication patterns of a VMM — an open empirical question.
What this section established
Cross-domain communication is the substrate on which any non-monolithic VMM is built. The mechanisms — synchronous calls (hypercalls, IPC), shared-memory rings (virtqueues, I/O rings), bulk sharing (grant tables, capabilities) — answer the same four questions in different ways and pay correspondingly different costs. The dominant cost components are boundary crossing and context switch; the dominant optimization technique is to amortize, batch, or eliminate the crossing. A disaggregated VMM bets that this cost can be made small enough to be worth the isolation gain; a language-isolated VMM bets that the cost can be eliminated almost entirely by moving the safety check from runtime to compile time.
The next section, VM Management and Cloud Extensions, zooms out from the data path entirely and looks at the operational side of virtualization: how VMs are created, snapshotted, migrated, and managed at scale.
